  • Ultrasonic Testing

Ultrasonic Testing

Ultrasonic Testing, also known as UT Testing, is a non-destructive testing used to detect and define internal inclusions or voids that may not be visible on the surface. This testing method uses sounds waves to pinpoint defects within the material and produce images that are more clearly defined compared to other testing methods. The advantage of using this type of testing is the accuracy and speed in which the material can be evaluated. There are two different types of ultrasonic testing methods: contact ultrasonic inspection and immersion ultrasonic inspection.

Contact Ultrasonic Testing

Contact Ultrasonic Inspection

Contact ultrasonic testing is often used when there’s only access to one side of the test material. The test is done through a portable equipment where a transducer has contact with the surface of the test material while emitting sound waves through a thin layer of gel couplant.

Immersion Ultrasonic Testing (IUT)

Immersion Ultrasonic Inspection

Immersion ultrasonic testing is useful to detect smaller defects like porosity and cracking. The test is done by submersing a material under liquid to allow better sound travel from the transducer through multiple angles. It then produces accurate reporting of sub-surface flaws and irregularities.

Capabilities

Ultrasonic testing is widely used in critical quality-related and safety-related applications often required for industries like medical, aerospace, oil and gas, power generation, and more. We offer a wide range of ultrasonic testing services to accommodate material testing of various sizes. Our ultrasonic inspection capabilities include:

  • Bar and Plate Contact & Immersion Testing

In addition to the standards listed above, thyssenkrupp Materials NA is also able to help OEMs and their sub-contractors conform to specific customer requirements. Contact us directly to discuss your customized need. Our experts will be happy to help!

Benefits

By purchasing products directly from us, manufacturers can obtain the materials that pass UT Testing all at once. Rather than purchasing and testing from two different facilities, the entire process can be done seamlessly to save you an inordinate amount of time while reducing processing and shipping costs.
